When it comes time to select an Online program to study in the medical/health field it may not be one of the easiest decisions that you are going to have to make in life. This is because the programs are all going to vary when it comes to their completion lengths and the credentials that come along with them as well.   • Is your online ultrasound technician school an accredited program? Accreditation is something that is very important. In fact, it is what the public looks for so they can know that the person has met the qualifications that are expected of them. Another thing to keep in mind is just because the school is accredited it does not mean the program you are thinking of taking is so it is always a good thing to double check. If you do not you may find that you wasted all that time on your education because some professions in the health care field will not allow you to take the required exam until you have completed a program that is accredited.
  • What type of certificate or degree will I receive? Make sure that before you enroll you specify which type of degree of certificate you will be receiving. This is something that is especially important if you plan on furthering your education. Also, you will want to make sure that you can transfer if you need to with your credits or without losing a bunch of them.
  • What will I be eligible to do once the program has been completed successfully? Make sure that you are aware as to whether or not you will be allowed to jump into the workforce as soon as you complete the program or after an additional test is taken. Each field has different criteria’s so you will want to make sure that you know what to expect to a “t”.
  • What is the cost of the online program and do you accept financial aid? Make sure that before you decide you have gotten different quotes. Also, make sure that financial aid will be accepted if that is what you are shooting for. Many programs allow loans to be taken out but you will be the one who is responsible for paying those back.
  • Can I speak with a current student or a recent graduate? All schools should be able to point you in the direction of a current student or recent graduate that has taken the program that interests you. This is important because you will not only find out about the program but they can also let you know what the job market is like as well as the types of support options that will be available to you
  • What type of on the job experience is provided along with the program? Many programs are going to make labs and clinical a part of their requirements. Usually, clinical take place in a workplace setting.
  • Are there any work settings or employees that you can recommend I speak with? Talking to employees who work in the field is a big help. They can help you understand what will be expected of you when you are trying to obtain a job in the field of your program.

A diagnostic medical sonographer is the person who assists patients which various services by utilizing a medical ultrasound.  They do work under the supervision of a physician who is help responsible for the ultrasound procedures. The sonographer carries the role of helping the physician get sonographic information in hopes to diagnosis a condition or disease that the patient is experiencing and also they monitor fetal development in pregnant women.

A sonographer is the medical professional who works in assisting the physicians when it comes to gathering the sonographic information needed to review and obtain the patients history. The ultimate goal of the medical ultrasound is to make sure that the patient is in good health or to help to obtain good health.

Characteristics of Employment

Diagnostic medical sonographers work in a variety of different health care settings such as hospitals, private offices and clinics. If employed full time you can expect to work at least 40 hours a week and you may have to be on call during the evening hours as well as weekends. Not to mention the fact that it is not uncommon for diagnostic medical sonographers to be called into work on a very short notice.

Currently, the demand for sonographers is up and it is continuing to grow. In 2008, the average diagnostic medical sonographer was bringing home $43,000 annually.


Length: If you plan on attending an accredited program you can expect to spend about 1 to 4 years in a classroom. All of this depends on the program you are taking and the degree or certificate that you are pursuing.

Pre – requisites: If you are attending a 1 year program you must have some sort of qualifications from a different allied health profession. If you are attending a 2 year program you must have a diploma or a GED. Both programs, however, require you to be at a college level in a variety of different courses such as communication and biological science. Not to mention the fact that sonographers must have certain skills such as critical thinking, social perceptiveness, and great learning strategies.

Curriculum: Accredited programs offer a variety of things such as physical science, patient care, image evaluation, and applied biological science.
